Mark Lee is a retired American astronaut who was born on August 14, 1952, in Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Lee was selected to join NASA in 1984 as an astronaut candidate. He flew on four Space Shuttle missions between 1990 and 1995, including STS-30, STS-47, STS-64, and STS-82, logging in more than 29 days in space. During his missions, he performed several spacewalks and helped to deploy the Hubble Space Telescope.
After leaving NASA in 1997, Lee joined the faculty of the University of Colorado Boulder's aerospace engineering program, where he taught and conducted research until his retirement in 2012. He was also involved in the development of the Dream Chaser spacecraft, which is being designed to transport crew and cargo to low Earth orbit.
In recognition of his contributions to space exploration, Lee has received numerous awards and honors, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and induction into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2013.
